Vatican, August 29, 2022 / 11:22 am (CNA).
The cardinals of the Catholic Church were summoned to Rome for an extraordinary consistory. This is the first of its kind in seven years – and only the second during the pontificate of Pope Francis.
The call was followed by 197 cardinals. But what are they discussing behind closed doors this Monday and Tuesday?
While it is difficult to obtain information. Vatican observers know that the meetings are devoted to discussing the new constitution of the Roman Curia, gospel predicate. The Cardinals break into language groups for the first round of debate. They then meet again and discuss their findings in plenary session, just as was done in recent synods.
We also know that the debate forms the third consistory in just a few days: the first, held on August 27, was devoted to the election of 20 new cardinals. The second, immediately after, approved the canonization of two blessed: Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, the Italian bishop and founder of the missionaries of St. Carla, and Artemis Zatti, an Italian immigrant to Argentina, a nurse and a Salesian brother.
While this context is significant – as is the historical background of the pope’s visit to L’Aquila on Sunday – messages from the Holy See were really sparse today, noted one Vatican, among others: “All the information we have from the #Vatican regarding today’s meeting between #Pope Francis and the Catholic cardinals of the world. One sentence: “Today in the Vatican, in the presence of the Holy Father Francis, there is a meeting of cardinals…”
One cardinal at least gave an idea of the atmosphere of today’s meeting. The first meeting with the Pope took place in a very fraternal atmosphere, Cardinal Enrico Feroci, pastor of the Church of Santa Maria del Divino Amore in Castel di Leva near Rome, told the Vatican News.
According to him, after the opening prayer, Francis opened the meeting by inviting all those present to contribute to these two days of reflection on gospel predicate.
Cardinal Feroci also said, according to the Vatican’s own account, that so far two reflections have been separated: one on communion, the evidence of mutual love between Christians, and one on the problems of today’s society, in order to open oneself to the message of the gospel. .
Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, in a subsequent conversation with the Vatican News, reiterated the active participation of the cardinals in the meeting, which maintained an open and intense dialogue.
Tomorrow, this “open and intense” debate will take place in plenary before the conclusion of this emergency consistory: on the afternoon of August 30, Pope Francis will celebrate Mass with the entire College of Cardinals in St. Peter’s Basilica.
