Supertech twin tower: Meet the men who will carry out India’s largest demolition

Posted on August 28, 2022

As all of Noida’s twin towers are due to be demolished today, it’s time to take a look at the people who will be on the task of demolishing one of the largest structures in the country.

Towers taller than the Qutub Minar in the nation’s capital, including the Apex (32 stories) and Ceyane (29 stories), which are part of the Emerald Court, have been found to be in violation of numerous rules regarding construction, and a lengthy legal battle ensued. there was a fight in the Allahabad High Court, and then in the Supreme Court of India, which ended in favor of the Residents Welfare Association. Mayur Mehta, project manager for Edifice Engineering, said: “We have one of the best teams in the world working on this project. They work hard and play harder.”

Mumbai-based Mehta’s Edifice Engineering was tasked with safely demolishing the structures. For this project, Edifice brought in South African specialists from Jet Demolitions.

Here are the people who will carry out the demolition of the Noida Twin Towers:

According to the Hindustan Times, a seven-man team from the South African company Jet Demolitions, along with Edifice Engineering, will blow up the twin towers in a feat of sorts.

Robert Brinkman, 62, also known as Uncle Joe, will lead the entire operation. “There is no book on demolition, no courses. It’s all in his mind; his personal intellectual property,” says Uttkarsh Mehta, partner at HT’s Edifice Engineering. Each of the 9,462 holes drilled in the twin towers, their purpose, location and size were determined by Brinkman to the nearest millimeter. “I have the best job in the world,” he says. “Every boy loves to break things, and I have turned that love into my passion.”

Smith, a civil engineer, found his passion when he saw a petrochemical plant being demolished. “I found myself staring at him for two whole hours, completely mesmerized. I found my love. I looked up who was doing the demolition and on the same day sent an email to Jet asking for an interview. Three days later I joined Jet,” he said in an interview with HT.

Martinus Botha, Chief Safety Officer and Blasting Coordinator, is responsible for safety at demolition sites.

Jan Ehlers is responsible for the planning, scheduling and detailing that needs to be done before such demolition projects are carried out.

Elias Ntidi is the man who is known to drive every demolition machine in the world.

Nolan Kleinhans is tasked with wrapping the structures in geotextile fabric to contain the explosion and prevent flying debris.

Chetan Datta, a 49-year-old blaster, “prayed” for the opportunity to press a button to destroy structures almost 100 meters high. And a year later, on August 28, Datta will press the button to start the demolition. “It’s like a dream come true,” says Datta, who hails from Hisar in Haryana. He was approached by Edifice Engineering, who were tasked with demolishing the turrets to act as a blaster.

“When the decision of the Supreme Court came, someone forwarded a message (about this) on WhatsApp, and I prayed to God that they would give me the opportunity to demolish the building. I didn’t expect to be selected… a few months later, in July, Edifice approached me and my firm to load explosives,” said Datta, who runs a demolition firm.

“In the last 10 days, we have loaded explosives very carefully. Now we are ready…” he added.

Uttkarsh Mehta and Jigar Chheda are the men who are leading the largest demolition project. “Uttkarsh is the face of Edifice. He gets the case and moves it forward. He takes care of all coordination with clients and authorities. He is our marketer. He knows how to speak and what to say, how much to say and to whom. I can’t do that,” says Chheda, a man behind the scenes of the team, who proudly declares that he’s not even an engineer when interacting with HT.
