What Is A Watermark? – Answering Frequently Asked Questions

Posted on August 25, 2022

What is a watermark? Most of us can identify a watermark if we see it, but can we actually identify it or explain what it is to someone else?

Don’t worry, we’ve compiled a list of six of the most frequently asked questions about watermarking. . . and took the time to answer them as well!

Table of Contents

  • What is a watermark?
  • On what types of objects can a watermark be used?
  • What are the legal restrictions governing the appearance of watermarks?
  • Is it worth using a free watermarking app?
  • What is the fastest watermarking speed?
  • What is the best design for a professional watermark?

What is a watermark?

Currently, the use of watermarking, which most of us are aware of, is the protection of digital assets. However, the watermark does not have to be placed on the digital asset. . . in fact, it was used for physical assets long before the Internet existed.

The most basic definition of a watermark is any marking or image that is placed on an asset as a means of security (or to show ownership).

Even though most of us nowadays think of protecting digital assets when watermarks come to mind, we are actually dealing with physical assets that have watermarks on a daily basis.

Very simple and common examples of watermarked material items are banknotes (fiat currency) and postage stamps.

On what types of objects can a watermark be used?

We already answered “what is a watermark” – so what’s next?

As we mentioned above, watermarks can be placed on a wide variety of things, whether physical or digital. What are some of them?

In addition to the aforementioned banknotes and postage stamps, it is not uncommon to see watermarks on items such as government documents, art files (scripts, photographs, etc.) and confidential company files. Watermarks can also be placed on almost any type of digital asset, including images, infographics, videos, and electronic documents.

What are the legal restrictions governing the appearance of watermarks?

Some government agencies have specific rules and restrictions that govern not only the use of their watermarks, but also their overall size, shape, color, and other formatting aspects. Key examples of this are watermarks, which are placed on banknotes and postage stamps.

However, there is no comprehensive set of rules governing the use of watermarks or their appearance. As a result, both companies and individuals are free to choose the size, shape, color and other visual aspects of their watermarks.

Is it worth using a free watermarking app?

Now that you can answer the question “what is a watermark” with confidence, you are probably wondering if a free watermarking app is even worth using.

Well, the answer is yes and no.

A free watermarking app that comes with no additional fees can be very attractive; however, you should always be careful because these types of applications can sometimes have very problematic warnings.

Luckily, there are some relatively great free watermark app options out there if you know what to look for – Visual Watermark is one example.

Many watermarked apps strip many of their features from their free versions, making them relatively useless if you want to use them for serious work; however, Visual Watermark does not. Instead, they give their users free access to all the features in a trial version of their app – the only limitation is that the “Protected by visual watermark” text will be added to images along with your watermark.

Another very attractive free watermarking app is “Watermarkly”. They also give their users access to many of their key features in their free version, with the only limit being the number of photos you can upload daily.

All in all, these types of apps that give you access to a very useful free version are beneficial because they give you the chance to test out the features before committing to a payment.

What is the fastest watermarking speed?

There is no set speed for watermarking because several factors can affect the complexity of the process. However, you will always find that a professional watermarking app will be faster than a free watermarking app.

That being said, here are some factors that can affect the speed of watermarks:

  • Watermark quality
  • Image Resolution
  • Hardware specifications of your device
  • The number of images you process

What is the best design for a professional watermark?

Remember when we said that there are no hard and fast rules governing the use of watermarks? Don’t worry, it’s still true; however, this does not mean that there is no optimal way to create watermarks.

The specifics of how your watermark looks will ultimately come down to your personal preference; however, that being said, here are some tips you should always keep in mind.

  • Your watermark must be large enough to cover at least 30% of your image and must be placed in a central location. This helps deter thieves from cropping your watermark.
  • Your watermark should be translucent and have colors that don’t overshadow your image (monotone is best). This makes it easy for viewers to see both the watermark and the content of your image.
  • Your watermark text should be easy to read. We recommend that you outline text with a thin outline—usually a solid white or black outline—to improve readability.
