Smartsense is Hyundai’s advanced technology for driver safety and convenience. It offers several features to assist drivers and is available on over 20 models.
Smartsens is HyundaiAdvanced safety and driver comfort technology, but how does it work? To stand out from the competition, each automaker gives its driver assistance system a unique name. Ford vehicles come with Blue Cruise, while Rivian electric vehicles come with Driver+. The Tesla Driver Assistance System is available in Autopilot and Full Self Driving options. To ensure that drivers have the latest security features, these systems usually receive OTA software updates.
In addition to different names, each automaker’s driver assistance technologies are assigned a certain level of autonomy. The Driver Safety System offers assistance from Level 1 (little or no autonomy) to Level 6 (total autonomy). Although the idea of complete autonomy sounds tempting, this level of autonomy is not available in any model intended for commercial use. For example, Tesla Autopilot and FSD offer Level 2 autonomy with features like Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning. Despite the technology’s ability to improve driver safety, automakers always reiterate that these systems should not be seen as a complete replacement for the human driver. The limitations of driver safety technology have become apparent recently, with Tesla facing litigation and bad publicity over Autopilot and FSD’s claims.
Smartsense is currently available on 21 Hyundai models, including the 2022 Car of the Year, the Ioniq 5. However, not all Smartsense features are available on all models, which is why Hyundai offers a “filter by safety feature” option. Potential buyers can visit the Smartsense web page and use the filter to see what driver safety features come with their preferred model. Hyundai Smartsense has been recognized by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for excellence in vehicle safety. The NHTSA has awarded eight Hyundai models a 5-star overall safety rating as part of its vehicle assessment program.
How Hyundai SmartSense works
Smartsense from Hyundai is divided into four categories. These four categories have several features that enhance driving comfort, driving safety, parking safety, and parking convenience. In the Driving Safety section, there is a Blind Spot Collision Avoidance system that activates when Hyundai detects a vehicle in the driver’s blind spot while the turn signal is flashing. To avoid an accident, this feature warns the driver and may apply the left or right front brake before the driver changes lanes. For parking safety, there is a “Rear Passenger Alert” feature that reminds the driver to check the rear seat so that a child or pet is not left behind. It only activates when the car is successfully parked and the engine is off.
For driving comfort, Highway Driving Assist allows the driver to stay in the center of the lane while maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front. It is also designed to help drivers maintain the correct speed by using GPS and highway data. For this feature to work, Smart Cruise Control or Lane Tracking must be enabled. Despite the safety and convenience offered by Hyundai Smartsense, drivers must always be alert and responsible for any important decisions on the road.
