Reddit is one of the largest social networks on the Internet. But for beginners, it can be difficult. Even for people who have been on the site for a while, the format can take a lot to learn and new features are added periodically. In addition, the general features of a site often work differently across different subreddits.
One of these features is “flair”. Maybe you have never heard of it. You may have seen it on the site but don’t know what it is or how to use it. Either way, it’s a simple function with a sometimes complex implementation.

What is Reddit Flair?
Flair is similar to the tag on other social media platforms. But since Reddit already has subreddits, flair allows for even more fine-tuning of posting and navigation.
These are the two main ways to use flair: better explain the intent of your own posts, and search Reddit for certain types of posts from others. Just keep in mind that talents are used differently across subreddits and you need to be in or post to a particular subreddit to use it.
How to Use Flair in a Reddit Post
You can add flavor to your post by adding it to a subreddit. You can also use flair when posting from the homepage or from your profile. In the latter case, choose Choose a community Button in the upper left corner of the message editor. Choosing a community will show the flair available in that subreddit. Although in some communities the flair is not used at all.
If the community you post to uses flair, Flair The button is in the lower right corner below the text field, but above Save draft as well as Mail buttons. The button even has a label image to help you find and understand the tool. When you post with flair, the style you choose appears as a color-coded tag in the title of your post.
How to use Flair to filter messages
If you scroll and see a style in a post you’re interested in, click the button to see only posts marked with that style. This method is handy because it works from the home page. Just know that clicking the flair button on a post on the front page will take you to the community where that post was created.
If you are already a member of the community, you can navigate the flair in the same way. You can also scroll down until you see Filter by flair margin bar on the right side of the screen. However, this is usually a set of talents popular in the community at the time, and not a complete list of all the talents available in that community.
Some communities also have Filter by flair button on the toolbar at the top of the page. This button really contains all the flair that this community uses. This is one of the best ways to find what you are looking for faster.
Is it possible to abuse intuition?
The way this flair works is quite simple, but the way people or communities use it can be complex. This can be confusing.
Perhaps the best example of this is the r/TrueFilm subreddit. This community is dedicated to “in-depth movie discussions”, so the style used in this community is quite specific. If you’re unfamiliar with the Reddit terms you should know, you may need to surf the community to better understand it before using it yourself.
Some people will also use a flair that at first glance seems counterintuitive to the purpose of their post, usually to amuse or evoke different responses. While this may be funny or profound for more experienced Reddit users, it may be difficult for some to understand. Some communities have a comedic flair to get around this, but not all communities.
After all, this aspect of Reddit isn’t defined so much by the moderators as it is by the results. If your flair navigation allows you to find the posts you want to see, you’re using it correctly. If your use of talent in your own posts gets the response you’re trying to get, then you’re using it correctly.

In fact, “flair” is just a “mark”. Of course, it works differently on Reddit, but don’t let that discourage you from exploring it. Like everything else on the platform, the more you dive in, the more you begin to understand.
