Variants of the Boost button have been around for a while – and more than the sci-fi and cartoon versions. This is usually the mode used for high performance vehicles such as the Hyundai Elantra N which have an NGS button to give the engine a powerful kick. Now, this feature is starting to catch on in the electric vehicle world.
Turning on the boost will give such a properly equipped car a massive boost in power for about 10 seconds, allowing you to have an exciting ride. However, this works very differently from the sport mode found in many electric vehicles. Unlike the sport mode, which is a setting that affects the vehicle’s range, using the EV power boost button does not significantly affect the vehicle’s range because the power boost is very short.
Which Electric Vehicles Have Boost Buttons?
Currently, the only vehicle on the EV market to have a dedicated boost button is the 2023 Genesis GV60. It’s also a bit surprising because Genesis is a luxury car brand and they are usually powerful cars with a need for speed that are equipped with boosters for extra power.
In the GV60, drivers can go from 429 horsepower to 483 horsepower at the push of a button. The extra boost gives the Genesis more power than the long-distance base Tesla Model 3.
However, there is a very strong possibility that other automakers will follow suit and add temporary power to future electric vehicles.
Where to find the boost button
In the Genesis GV60, the boost button is located on the steering wheel and is within reach of the driver’s right thumb. Gasoline vehicles that have a boost button have it in a similar position. If a Boost button appears in future electric vehicles, it will most likely also be located on the steering wheel.
Tesla’s Ridiculous Impulse
While they don’t have a physical boost button, some Tesla models can get an extra boost of power by turning on the laughable mode. Improvements in software and some hardware improve performance by increasing the amount of current drawn from the battery and delivered to the motors. Ludicrous Plus mode maximizes speed by heating the battery to the optimum temperature.
The driver activates Ludicrous Plus by depressing the brake pedal and depressing the accelerator pedal at the same time until the battery reaches the optimum temperature. The driver then releases the brake for instant and maximum acceleration off the line.
When to Use Boost
You are most likely not a drag racer. However, you can find legitimate uses for the extra power. The best time to use the boost button on your car is on the highway with higher speed limits than on the street. It is important to note that you must ensure that there is no traffic and that the roads, or at least your lane, are clear of other drivers.
Even on the highway it is better to use acceleration only on straight sections. Winding roads can cause you to lose control of your vehicle, especially when driving faster than usual. And it goes without saying that you must obey the law on public roads, no matter how powerful your car is.
Since there is a time and place for everything, there are a few cases where you shouldn’t use the boost button. One such case is city driving, where stop-and-go traffic is more likely. This can increase your chances of getting into an accident. Also, when weather conditions are less than favorable on wet and slippery roads, boost can become a nuisance and can lead to a hydroplaning accident. Always use caution when using the boost button in an electric vehicle.
