The new Celebrity MasterChef series is in full swing, with another group of 20 celebrities vying to impress judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace.
Among them is Adam Pearson, a presenter and campaigner who has previously made documentaries on disability discrimination and has also co-starred with Scarlett Johansson on the big screen.
Here’s what you need to know about the TV star and disability rights activist as he joins the 2022 Celebrity MasterChef lineup.
Who is Adam Pearson?
Work: TV presenter, actor and disability rights activist
Adam Pearson is an actor, presenter and activist who was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1 at the age of five. The genetic condition causes non-cancerous tumors to grow on nerve tissue anywhere in the body and is estimated to affect about one in 3,000 people.
His first acting role came in 2013 when he starred opposite Scarlett Johansson in the sci-fi film Under the Skin, directed by Jonathan Glaser. He saw the role as an opportunity to counter the stigma surrounding disfigurement, telling the Observer, “If I try to be as normal as possible and show that I have nothing to fear – not in the film, not day after day, going around the corner to go buy milk – the more people see him in society, the less stigmatization there will be.”
Pearson has worked behind the scenes in television as a researcher on shows such as The Strangers and Beauty and the Beast: The Ugly Face of Prejudice for Channel 4, appearing on the latter as a host.
He then went on to host the BBC Three documentaries Adam Pearson: Freak Show and The Ugly Face of Disability Hate Crime, and also appeared alongside his identical twin brother Neil in a Horizon episode titled My Amazing Twin . Neal also has neurofibromatosis, but it has affected him in different ways: he suffers from epilepsy and memory loss, but this condition has not affected his appearance.
Pearson has also served as a reporter and host for several seasons of Channel 4’s The Tricks of the Restaurant Trade and is an ambassador for the charity Changing Faces, which aims to end discrimination against people with visible differences.
He recently starred in The Other Man, a psychological thriller produced by acclaimed independent studio A24, and will appear alongside Marvel’s Sebastian Stan and Worst Man in the World star Renata Reinswe.
Announcing the news of his appearance on Celebrity MasterChef in an Instagram post, Pearson joked that he would either “win it all or set the disabled community back a few years” but promised that “I’m going to have some fun either way.”
